PROJECT FACTS

The renovation of Kentucky Hall and Talcott Hall on the campus of Berea College began primarily as an interior space renovation.  However, during the early stages of design it became apparent that a centralized “connector” between the two dormitories with a central elevator was the best solution for use of space and meeting code requirements for egress. The three-story “connector” structure was designed to be constructed above and within the existing one-story annex structure that is located between the two dormitories.  New concrete spread footings were installed in the basement of the annex and a new steel frame was inserted through holes in the existing roof.

This method of construction allowed for the existing roof to stay in place until the new frame was erected, protecting the existing structure from weather exposure, keeping the existing exterior walls braced and providing a work platform for the structural steel installers.  BKSE, GBBN, Inc. and Messer Construction Co. worked closely during the design process to ensure a safe and efficient structure that was not only cost-effective, but aesthetically pleasing as the majority of the steel is exposed in the finished structure.
